Do you recall how to express time in Spanish? You use "Es la . . ." (when the hour is 1:00) or "Son las . . ." (when the hour is 2:00-12:00). In addition, remember that 15 past the hour is expressed by saying "y cuarto," half past the hour is expressed by saying "y media," 45 minutes past the hour is expressed by saying "menos cuarto."
Check out the examples below:
12:00 = Son las doce.
1:05 = Es la una y cinco. *Don't forget that the one o'clock hour is expressed using una, not uno.
6:50 = Son las siete menos diez. *Don't forget to move to the next hour and subtract the number of minutes until the hour.
3:15 = Son las tres y cuarto.
7:30 = Son las siete y media.
10:45 = Son las once menos cuarto. *Don't forget to move to the next hour and subtract the number of minutes until the hour.
This lesson will extend the use of these phrases to express at what time an event occurs.
