A member of the Muskegon language family, the Chickasaw tribe was native to the woodlands of Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. Unlike the other tribes targeted for removal, the Chickasaw agreed immediately to a financial settlement that would allow them to purchase land from the Choctaw tribe in Indian Territory. In 1836, the entire Chickasaw tribe traveled to what is now Oklahoma and settled on the land they purchased from the Choctaw Nation. The land carved out for them by the Choctaw agreement was called "the Leased District" until the signing of the Choctaw-Chickasaw Treaty of 1854. At that time, the land become the Chickasaws' own.
In 1856, the Chickasaws established a new capitol in what would become Tishomingo, Oklahoma. They also ratified their own Constitution and established a cavalry police force called the Lighthorsemen, which patrolled the Chickasaw Nation until after the Civil War.
This map of modern Oklahoma shows the tribal lands of all the Native American tribes who still call the state home. |
