After using the Occupational Outlook Handbook to explore some possibilities, do you have a better idea of what you want to do with the rest of your life? If you're still not sure what career path is right for you, you are not alone. It doesn't make sense to finalize such an important decision while you are still in high school!
Suppose, though, that you have an idea what you'd like to do or be, but you just want some reassurance that you're on the right path. Well, there is a tool for that! Career One Stop, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, is a free online resource for career exploration, training information, and job details. The web site includes a self-assessment tool that you can use to identify your skills and interests and then match them to a possible career.
Career One-Stop asks you to rate your level of ability in 40 key workplace skills. After you complete the evaluation, you will be shown the top ten careers that align with your interests and abilities. Follow the directions below to try it out!
Use an internet search engine to find the Career One Stop web site. Once you're there, click on Explore Careers and select Skills Assessment. Near the bottom of the page is a link that says Skills Matcher. Click on this link and begin your self-assessment.
Did taking the assessment show you any jobs that seemed interesting? Were there any jobs listed that surprised you?
Use what you learned from the Career One-Stop self-assessment to reconsider or add to the list of possible careers you already have in mind. Then complete Section 2 of the worksheet you started on the previous page. (You will need to revisit the Occupational Outlook Handbook to complete this part of the assignment.)
Review the rubric below to ensure that you have completed all parts of the assignment. Once you are certain that the assignment is completed to the best of your ability, please submit it to your teacher.
