Ir means “to go.”
Ir is an irregular verb and its forms must be memorized.
| Yo | Voy | Nosotros (as) | Vamos |
| Tú | Vas | Vosotros (as) | Vais |
| Usted/él/ella | Va | Ustedes/ellos/ellas | Van |
To say that someone is going to do something, we use the formula: IR + A + Infinitive.
- First, you must conjugate the verb “Ir”
- Add the preposition “A” (not connected to the verb)
The preposition “A” is used after the verb “Ir” to mean “to”.
Por ejemplo: Voy a comer = I am going to eat
The verb after the preposition “A” is not conjugated (that is why we call it the infinitive).
Question
What happens when we have a noun instead of an infinitive verb?
Por ejemplo: Voy a la playa= I go to the beach
If the noun is masculine then you must do something extra.
Por ejemplo: Vamos a el cine (This is incorrect and it cannot stay this way).
You must combine a + el = AL
Vamos al cine.
