Is there an Undo operation in mathematics?

Have you ever been typing a paper or email and then decided to remove the sentence that you just finished? Or perhaps you’ve accidentally deleted something that you didn’t mean to. In most word-processing programs, the Undo function can help you back up—whether that is to undo the creation of words or the destruction of them. In either case, that undo feature is handy.

Like the Undo function, inverse operations in mathematics are used to undo something. You know that subtraction undoes addition and vice versa. That is why we can say that addition and subtraction are inverse operations. You also know that division undoes multiplication; thus, division and multiplication are inverse operations.

Like basic operations, relations and functions also have a way to “undo” them—using inverse relations or functions. In this lesson, you will learn how to find the inverse of a relation and a function.
