Pen Line Tones

field of grass drawn with lines Using your black ink pen on white paper, practice building uniform dark tones by repeating many closely spaced lines first in one direction, then across in another direction. Try for a very dark tone (but always keep the lines distinct — never “lost” in a solid mass). Cut out a piece and paste it in the darkest tone step next to black (Low dark).

Then try a very light tone with the pen lines much more loosely-spaced to allow more of the white paper to show through. Paste it in the lightest value step (High light).

Continuing with closely spaced and crossed pen lines; practice making a middle tone, halfway between the high light and the low dark. Continue with the other tones until you complete the seven value steps. Cut out and paste in place in the proper steps of the chart on the Value Scale worksheet.
