Texture Pattern Tones

Experiment with making rubbed texture patterns. Using white drawing paper or newsprint, lay a sheet over any rough surface, such as a plaster wall, a lace doily, or a woven basket. Rub the paper with a soft pencil until the pattern of the textured surface shows through.

Continue searching and try this rubbing on many different surfaces. Keep those that show the clearest and most interesting pattern. For lighter value press on your color stick or crayons lightly; for darker values add more pressure as some surfaces will make naturally light or dark textures.

When you have 7 good texture patterns, sort them out from the lightest to the darkest tones. Cut out squares, and paste them in the seven value steps that they compare with the best.

Can you see that some texture patterns make light tones and some make darker tones?
