An LP record on a turntable close-upThese days we use compact discs (CDs) to play music; there aren’t very many long-playing, or phonograph, records (LPs) left. Yet not very long ago, most music was recorded on LPs and not on CDs. CDs and LPs use different technologies to encode sound and transmit it back for our ears. CDs are now the preferred recording device.

The two big advantages to CDs over LPs are:

  • They aren’t damaged as easily.

  • They are smaller.
