Renewable energy sources can be replenished in a relatively short period of time.

If an energy source can be renewed, it means that we can replenish our supply of it after we use it. For example, energy derived from wind mills is harnessed from the wind, something that we assume will always be on Earth, so we will never run out of it. Renewable energy is in contrast to non-renewable energy sources like fossil fuels that will some day run out.

The five most common sources of renewable energy include hydroelectric (water), solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass. Click on the table below to learn more about each of these sources of energy.

Types of Renewable Energy
Hydroelectric Generation of electricity by harnessing the energy of running water
Solar Power obtained by harnessing the energy of the sun's rays
Wind Power obtained by harnessing the energy in wind
Geothermal Power extracted from heat stored in the earth
Biomass Fueled by renewable biological substances such as plant materials and wood.
