Vertical Shift Practice

Now you try.

Can you identify the vertical shift value (k) in the graphs below? For each of the following graphs, identify the value of k in the function \(\small\mathsf{ f(x) = a(x-h)^{2} + k }\).

Practice 3

Practice 4

graph 1

\(\small\mathsf{ k = 0, f(x) = (x-2)^{2} }\)

This graph is not shifted vertically from the parent function f(x) = x2, so it has a k value of 0.

graph 2

\(\small\mathsf{ k = 5, f(x) = -3(x+0)^{2} + 5 }\)

This graph is shifted up 5 units from the parent function f(x) = x2, so it has a k value of 5.

graph 3

\(\small\mathsf{ k = -2, f(x) = 0.2(x+3)^{2} - 2 }\)

This graph is shifted 2 units down of the parent function f(x) = x2, so it has a k value of -2.

graph 4

\(\small\mathsf{ h = 1, f(x) = -1(x+4)^{2} + 1 }\)

This graph is shifted 1 units up from the parent function f(x) = x2, so it has a k value of 1.
