Dale wants to build a wooden box that measures 1.5 meters by 1 meter by 1.75 meters.

Part 1: Dale plans to paint all six sides of the outside of the wooden box after he builds it. What is the outside surface area of the box?

(1.5 x 1) + (1.5 x 1) + (1.75 x 1) + (1.75 x 1) + (1.5 x 1.75) + (1.5 x 1.75)
11.75 m2

Part 2: One can of paint will cover 5 square meters. How many cans of paint will Dale need to buy to paint the outside of his wooden box?

3 cans of paint

A horizontal cylinder is used to store diesel fuel. The cylinder is 9 feet in length. Each base of the cylinder has a radius of 2.5 feet.

What is the total surface area of the diesel tank?

C = 3.14(5) = 15.7
A of circle = 3.14(2.52) = 19.625
A of rectangle = 15.7 x 9 = 141.3
SA = 141.3 + 19.625 + 19.625 = 180.55 ft2

Find the surface area of this triangular prism:

Triangular Prism base 8 in. by 4 in. height of 3 in.

B = \( \mathsf{\frac{1}{2}} \)(4)(3) = 6
Rectangle areas:
8 x 5 = 40
8 x 4 = 32
8 x 3 = 24
SA = 6 + 6 + 40 + 32 + 24 = 108 in2
