What Is the Difference Between These Two Points?

Making sure your essay is not just about the documents is an important part of the process. To ensure that you are doing so, pay close attention to both the “additional evidence” requirement and the “analysis and reasoning” requirement. The main difference between the two is in the details. Additional Evidence

Analysis and Reasoning (Complexity)

Additional evidence should be placed in at least one of your body paragraphs, if not all of them. You must provide an example or additional piece of specific evidence beyond those found in the documents to support the topic sentence. Not only that, you have to make sure that evidence supports the argument in your thesis.

Recommended Format

“One piece of historical evidence that further demonstrates….is...because...”

The evidence must be described, and it must be more than just a phrase or reference—it must be specific. Read each of the statements below. Click the one you think would earn the “additional evidence” point.

The analysis and reasoning or complexity statement is best located in the essay's conclusion. That way, you do not forget to include it. It is the most common point that is missed by students. Analysis and reasoning is difference from the additional evidence because it explains the connections between the argument and a different historical period, situation, era, geographical areas, or a completely different field of inquiry (like math or geography).

To earn the point, you have to explain the connection and use historical detail. Read each of the statements below. Click the one you think would earn the “analysis and reasoning” point.
