Make a voltaic pile!
You will need to a volt-ohm meter, some pennies and nickels, salt, water, and a paper towel.
Procedure:
- Dissolve as much salt as you can in the water by heating up the water first.
- Break the paper towel into small pieces. Soak the pieces in the salt water.
- Create a pile by layering the nickels, paper towel, and pennies, in that order, making sure the top coin is different than the bottom one.
- Make it three or four layers deep. Use the tester to measure the current and voltage that the pile produces. Record the voltage.
- Now add more layers. What happens to the current and voltage as you add layers? Record your voltage.
- Try using pennies and dimes, and see what happens. If you want, try other different metals. What happened with different metals.
