The first type of energy that was used to produce electricity was chemical. Electricity was produced from the reaction caused when two metals, zinc and copper, acting as electrodes, were put in a certain acid. The acid is called the electrolyte. This combination of electrodes and electrolyte is called an electric cell, and it is how batteries are made.
