The images above show some Renaissance works in comparison with a few that came earlier--during the Middle Ages--and a few that came later--during the Impressionist period in art history. How was Renaissance art different, compared to the art of these other periods?
Renaissance artists used realism and perspective to cause an emotional response in the viewer. Medieval artists had not discovered those techniques, and later artists sometimes chose not to use them for various reasons, including the desire to experiment with new ways of "seeing."
