In Jefferson’s view, the federal government should be small. Its responsibilities should be limited to delivering the mail, collecting customs duties, and conducting a census every ten years.


Sacajawea was the only female among 32 male members of the Lewis and Clark expedition. She was part of the main party from April 7, 1805, until August 14, 1806. Her official role was that of a Shoshone interpreter.


The measure wiped out all American commerce with other nations. It also proved ineffective against Great Britain. The British simply traded with South America for its agricultural goods.


The Federalists had opposed the war. Some even wanted to secede because of it. At the Hartford Convention, they drew up a list of proposed amendments to the Constitution. Following the victory at New Orleans, their grievances seemed unpatriotic. The party lost respect. The war hawks were the big winners, and they took up the banner of the Republican Party. They favored trade, western expansion, the energetic development of the economy, and a strong army and navy.
