What else do historical documents tell us, besides key events?

Some historical text, like the words written on the chocolate bar wrapper, simply provide a sequence of events--a list or description of events in the order they happened. Other documents include something more. This paragraph from a history of the Olympic Games describes several key events, but it also tries to make a point about the Games' history. What does this author want you to understand about Olympic history?
Olympic Games

For the earliest Olympic Games, athletes, trainers, judges, and spectators came from all parts of Greece to take part in the festivities. Vendors set up tent cities around the area where the games took place, selling food, beverages, and even offerings for visitors to present to the gods. Artists and poets entertained the crowds between games. At night, runners carrying torches competed in relay races, and the winning team would light a fire at an altar for Zeus. Everyone feasted and enjoyed the excitement that happens when thousands of people get together to have a good time. Today, the Olympic spirit continues as people from all over the world travel long distances to compete in a way that celebrates excellence in sports.
