In this lesson, you learned about some of the physical changes that allow a newborn to adapt to life outside its mother’s body. You also learned about the reflexes the newborn relies on to clear its nose and locate and ingest food. However, sometimes these adaptations aren’t enough to ensure survival.
When a baby who seems otherwise healthy dies during sleep, this is called sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). SIDS, formerly called crib death, is one of the most common causes of death in babies less than a year old. Most babies who die of SIDS are between the ages of 2 and 4 months.
For this week’s activity, you are going to investigate what current medical science knows about SIDS and how to prevent it.
