Mountains are found all over the Earth, on the land, as well as in the sea, though we know more about the mountains on land. The tallest mountain is Mount Everest, which stands 8,848 meters, or 29,029 feet, tall at its peak. In total there are 14 mountains that are more than 8,000 meters tall including Mount Everest, K2, and Broad Peak. All of these mountains are part of the Himalayas, a range of mountains that form the border between Nepal and Tibet.
All of Earth's continents have mountains. There is Kilimanjaro in Africa , Mount Tyree in Antarctica, Elbrus in Europe, Mount McKinley in North America, and Ojos del Salado in South America.
Geologically related mountains are often grouped into mountain ranges. Some of the better known ranges include the Andes which are found along the western coast of South America. While the Himalayas are the tallest range, the Andes are the longest mountain range with a length of 7,000 km or 4,300 miles. The Alps are a well known mountain range in Europe which stretch from Austria to Slovenia, through Switzerland, Germany and France, to Italy and Monaco. In North America, the Rocky Mountains stretch more than 3,000 miles from British Columbia and Alberta in Canada to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico in the United States.
