Encoding is the way that you gather, pay attention to, and organize information for later use.  The process of encoding begins the instant a new experience or piece of information hits your brain.  When you have a new experience or receive new information, it may seem that your brain simply records the experience for safe keeping.  In reality, encoding is much less like pressing a button and much more like the impact of a speeding car hitting a wall.

The moment the brain receives information, encoding begins. Consider the way your brain might begin to encode information you learn in your math class. When your brain receives the formula, the diagonal lines in the formula are separated from the vertical lines, and the lines, colors, and letters are scattered to different parts of your brain.  The scattering is not random.  The brain sends each part of the information to the appropriate brain lobe. Then, in a process scientists do not yet understand, binding occurs.  Your brain binds, or brings the pieces back together, allowing you to make immediate sense of them.

When does encoding occur?

  1. at the moment the information is understood
  2. after the information is stored as memory
  3. as information is first received
  4. when information is repeated
