The measure of a memory’s strength is your ability to retrieve it. 

If you can recall information, it has made it past the steepest part of the forgetting curve—past the first few minutes, hours, and days—and been stored for later use.  

It is your turn to explore encoding.

1. You will need a pencil and your 1.3 Complex Encoding form. Before continuing,  click here to open and print the form for use during this activity.

2. Click the video below to open a list of words that you will read and then attempt to recall.

3. As you read the words, count the number of vowels in each word.

4. When the video is complete, stop and write all of the words that you can remember from the list.

5. View the video only once!

6. Once you click play, the word list will appear five seconds after you click on the arrow.  Make sure the video is full-screen or a size you can read effectively.
