Exercise, sleep, and nutrition play important roles in healthy body and brain functions. These specific factors give you great power over your learning. Think about it. When you are tired, you get grumpy. When you are hungry you cannot think. When you spend the day sitting and doing nothing, you are inclined to sit and do more of nothing. You know what Benjamin Franklin knew. Now, you understand why he was right. Your body systems are not random. For a period of time, you may get by with no exercise, little sleep, and poor nutrition, but eventually, your body and your brain will begin to show clear signs of your neglect.
When you connect your exercise, sleep, and nutrition choices you will be inspired to make better lifestyle choices. It is easier to make good choices when you connect the value of those choices to the things that matter to you. Learning well and experiencing success in your courses provides many benefits now and in the future. By making healthy choices now, you support the health of your brain, set yourself on the path to effective learning, and create opportunities for future success.
You will now evaluate your lifestyle choices and their impact on your brain. Use your 1.4 Healthy Brain Choices chart to analyze and evaluate your exercise, sleep, and eating habits.
First, record your current habits in each category. Use the columns on the right side of the chart to describe your satisfaction with your current habits and choices. Consider whether you would like to improve your habits and choices. Describe how you might benefit from improving your habits. Take a few minutes to describe how you can improve your healthy brain choices.
