Magnetism From Electricity

How is magnetism produced by a current?

Objectives

Students will:

  1. Understand that a magnetic field is produced by a current-carrying wire and describe what factors affect the strength of the magnetic field.
  2. Use the right-hand rule for current-carrying conductor to determine the direction of the magnetic field around a current-carrying wire.
  3. Use the relationship between the current and position to determine the magnitude of the magnetic field in a current-carrying wire.
  4. Explain the concept of a solenoid and how to create an electromagnet.
  5. Explain how an electric motor works and build an electric motor.
