PDF Download Today, we are going to take a closer look at plot.
What is plot?
It’s something you will find in every story you read. Without it, there wouldn’t be a story to read!
The plot includes the major events and actions in a story.
Imagine that you are taking a walk on a beautiful, sunny day. You look around and you can see a few trees and flowers. The land is flat, so you can only see what is right around you. It’s a nice walk, but you know it could be better. There’s so much more to be seen.
You spot a mountain up ahead. As you climb higher and higher on the mountain, you can see for miles. You see a small village that you never knew was there before and more mountains off in the distance. What a different view!
Like this walk, books are more exciting with some action. The beginning is flat. There isn’t too much going on in our story yet. We are being introduced to our characters and setting. Soon, we are introduced to the problem. We read about events that lead up to the main problem or conflict in our story. Things start to get interesting in our story. Just like your walk did once you climbed high enough to be able to see more sights around you. Then we reach the high point in our story. This is when the problem reaches a high point. It’s usually the most exciting and memorable part in a story. After that, the story starts to wind down. The characters work to solve the problem or conflict. Finally, we reach the end. The resolution is how things end in our story. So you see, we wouldn’t have much of a story if it didn’t have a plot. And it wouldn’t be nearly as exciting without that climb to the top.

We will take a closer look at plot this week as we read our story “Attic Memories.”
