Other Ways to Write Partial Quotients Continued

Let’s look at a couple of the examples to see if we can group some of the powers of 10 so that we have fewer subtracting steps.

Goal:

In the problem 3,300 ÷ 25, our first step was to subtract 100 twenty-fives. When we subtracted, we had 800 left over, so we could not have subtracted 200 twenty-fives. That step was fine. subtraction image
However, when we subtracted from 800, we ended up subtracting 250 three times: subtraction image
If you know your 25 facts, you know that 25 x 3 = 75, so 25 x 30 = 750. We could easily subtract 750 from 800 and skip a couple of subtracting steps: subtraction image

We still get 132 as the answer, but we have fewer steps. It is very helpful if you can see these relationships between numbers, but if you can’t, you can list the numbers as they did in the video.
