Goal: Can you use a thousand chart to find place-value patterns?

Emma and Wyatt can use addition to count the birds. Each group of birds has 100 in it. That means we can skip count by 100!

3 groups of 100 flamingos

100,         200,         300

There are 300 flamingos at the lake! If we add 100 + 100 + 100, that is also 300. We get the same number faster if we skip count!

Let’s look at 100 to find patterns. They will help us skip count!

hundreds place   tens place   ones place

We used these numbers to count the birds. Do you see a pattern in each place?

100,   200,   300

The ones place is always 0. The tens place is always 0, too! The hundreds place grows by 1 each time we count.

We will use a thousands chart to skip count by 100. It is like a hundreds chart with bigger numbers. It grows by 10 up to 1,000.

Click each box to skip count by 100.
