Fluency
How can I become a more fluent reader?
Goal:
Goal:

Let's work on our fluency today
and practice our rate, expression, and intonation.
Our rate is the speed at which we read,
expression is reading with feeling, and
intonation is the raising and lowering
of our voice as we read.
Listen to the passage below being read aloud. Listen for the reader's rate, expression, and
intonation. Listen more than once if you need to. Then, read along with the recording. Can
you match the rate, expression, and intonation? It's okay if you need to try a few times.
Practice makes perfect!
"Look!" he shouted, and pointed at
Lady Liberty. Hundreds of people followed Lawrence's gaze. They clapped and cheered
wildly when they saw the statue. Many people cried. They had come to the land of
freedom, where they could make better lives for themselves.
Lawrence got off the ship at Ellis Island. He and Papa stood in long lines. Eventually,
they reached the front of the line and spoke with the officials. The workers asked
Lawrence and Papa a lot of questions. Lawrence could not understand the workers. They
spoke English, and Lawrence did not. Doctors gave them exams to make sure they did not
have a disease. They were healthy, so they were allowed to pass through.
Now, it's your turn! Practice reading the
passage aloud. Pay close attention to your rate, expression, and intonation.
When you are ready, record yourself reading the passage on your
own using the audio recording software of your choice.
