Do you know the difference between these words? Which one do you live in?

city

town

village

A simple way to look at these is to say that a city has the biggest population, a town has a smaller population, and a village has the smallest population. This is true for many locations in the United States, but this is not always the case.

City

A city is a large settlement of people that has a local government and gives services to its citizens. Cities have organized housing, transportation, utilities, and more.

Here is a list of U.S. cities with the largest populations: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and San Jose.

A town is a community with no powers of government. There are some states that have towns with limited powers.

Village

In general, a village is smaller than a town. Villages do not have the power of government.
