What were Sioux homes like?

Detail of "View of Chimney Rock, Ogalillalh Sioux Village in Foreground" — by Albert Bierstadt; 1860. The Sioux lived in the Great Plains. They and many other Native Americans preferred to live in wide, open spaces that gave them wonderful hunting opportunities.

The Sioux lived in small communities where they built tepees for houses, or dwellings (see the picture on this page). The women would sew together animal hides and tie them over three poles in the ground. They would often decorate them with paints and dyes made from local plants. Tepees allowed the Sioux to move quickly and follow buffalo and herds of other animals.
