Goal: How do ten frames help us add in place-value charts?

Mia has 14 pieces of candy, and Ruth has 9 pieces. How many pieces of candy do they have altogether? Let’s use ten frames in a place-value chart to find out!

14 + 9 = 23

Tens and Ones place-value-chart: In the tens section: 1 ten-frame with 10 red dots, and another ten frame with 4 red dots. In the ones section: no ten-frame.

Place ten frames and dots in the tens section to represent the largest addend.

14 + 9 = 23

Tens and Ones place-value-chart: In the tens section: 1 ten-frame with 10 red dots, and another ten frame with 4 red dots and 6 yellow. In the ones section: one ten-frame with 3 yellow dots.

Place dots in the tens section to fill in the empty spaces. Then, place a ten frame and dots into the ones section. These dots represent the smallest addend.

14 + 9 = 23

Tens and Ones place-value-chart: In the tens section: 1 ten-frame with 10 red dots, and another ten frame with 4 red dots and 6 yellow. In the ones section: one ten-frame with 3 yellow dots. There is also the number 20 underneath the tens section, and a 3 underneath the ones section.
