Leo and Gwen just came back from a night of fun. They collected a lot of candy! Before they start eating, Leo and Gwen want to know how much candy they have. Let’s help them count their candy!

We can start with their candy pumpkins. Leo has 14 candy pumpkins and Gwen has 8. We need to find out how many candy pumpkins they have in total.

Let’s use a place-value chart with ten frames to help us! Remember, ten frames help us add to ten quickly because we can easily group numbers together.

Leo has 14 candy pumpkins. We can use red dots to represent his candy. Gwen has 8 candy pumpkins. We can use blue dots to represent her candy.

We know that a ten frame can hold 10 dots. If a ten frame is full, we can simply look at it as the number “10”. 20 + 2 = 22. Leo and Gwen have 22 candy pumpkins all together.

Leo and Gwen also have candy corn. Gwen has 44 pieces of candy corn and Leo has 5 pieces. How many red dots will we need to represent Gwen’s candy corn?

That’s right! We will need 44 red dots. How many blue dots will we need to represent Leo’s candy corn?

Very good! We need 5 blue dots.

There are 4 full ten frames and one ten frame with just one blank square. This shows us 40 + 9 =

49. Leo and Gwen have 49 pieces of candy corn all together.

Let’s count Leo and Gwen’s suckers next! Leo has 27 suckers and Gwen has 7 suckers. We can use 27 red dots to represent Leo’s suckers and 7 blue dots to represent Gwen’s suckers. Hmmm, what addition sentence can we use to add these dots together?

Very good! 30+4=34. Leo and Gwen have 34 suckers in all.

Leo and Gwen also collected orange candies while trick-or-treating. Gwen has 11 orange candies and Leo has 9. How many red dots will we need for Gwen’s candy?

Yes, 11! How many blue dots will we need for Leo’s candy? That’s right, 9!

Wow! The amount of orange candy fits perfectly into 2 ten frames. What addition sentence can we use for these ten frames?

Yes! 10+10=20. Leo and Gwen have 20 orange candies.

Leo and Gwen collected so much candy while visiting neighbors today! Thank you for using ten frames to help them add their candies today. Now they can start eating their candy!

Tens and Ones chart. In the tens section: 2 ten-frames with all red dots and a third ten-frame with 4 red dots an 6 yellow dots. In the ones section: 1 ten-frame ith 1 yellow dot.

Can you find the sum using this place-value chart?
24 + 7 = _____

Great job! 24 + 7 = 31.

Sorry, that is not the correct sum. 24 + 7 = 31.
