We know that pronouns take the place of nouns, but how can we make sure pronouns are used correctly?
Antecedents can help with that. The antecedent of a pronoun is the noun that it refers to. If the antecedent is singular, the pronoun should be singular. If the antecedent is plural, the pronoun should be plural.
The cat drank its milk.
The pronoun its and the antecedent cat are both singular.
The students walked to their classrooms.
The pronoun their and the antecedent students are both plural.
We’ll take another look at antecedents again tomorrow.
