You have three sounds this week! You have learned about the soft c and soft g sounds. Today, you will also learn that when you see three letters--dge--together, they make the "jjjj." So, whenever you see dge walking together, they make the "jjj" sound.

Let's listen for some words that have the dge sound in them.
Bridge. Did you hear the "jjj" sound at the end of that word? "Jjj" is the last sound in the word bridge. When you see dge together, remember, they make the "jjj" sound.

So when we are writing and trying to sound out words, how do we know when to use dge for the "jjj" sound? Usually dge follow short vowel sounds. Listen and look at the words on the screen.
bridge All of those words had a short vowel sound followed by the letters dge. Since the letters dge followed a short vowel sound, those letters made the "jjj" sound.

So, just remember, every time you see dge walking together, they make the "jjj" sound. Start watching for dge walking together.
