An article is a special kind of adjective. Remember adjectives are words that describe nouns. There are three articles; a, an, and the.

The describes one definite thing or things.

The stars are shining bright in the sky.

A and an refer to any one item or group. You will use a before words that start with a consonant sound. You will use an before words that start with a vowel sound.

A bear is in a tree.

Demonstratives (what a big word!) are adjectives used to point something out. The words this, that, these, and those are demonstrative words.

You use this and that with singular nouns.
