You know how to read and write sentences.
How do sentences work together to make a paragraph?
Our first sentence has to tell the reader what we’re writing about.
This is our topic sentence.
For the book, “Jump” our topic sentence is

This story is about the food chain.
Notice that the beginning sentence of a paragraph starts over to the right. We call this an indent.

Trace the arrow with your finger.

The first sentence needs to start with the word- first. Can you touch the word “First” with your finger?

This is called a transition word.
First, the fish wants to eat the fly.
What comes after first?

Yes, the next sentence starts with the transition word, second. Tap the word “Second.”

Second, the fish wants to eat the fly.
What comes after second?

Great! The next sentence starts with the transition word, third. Push on the word “Third.”

Third, the fox wants to eat the frog.

The last transition we will use is (pause) in conclusion. Can you find those two words and underline them with your finger?

In conclusion, this story is about what want to eat in the food chain.

A paragraph is a group of sentences all about the same idea.
A paragraph starts with a topic sentence,
gives three facts, and ends with a concluding sentence.
Let’s go put all our sentences together and make a paragraph!
