Goal: Use a number line to show both addends.

Let’s find the sum of 4 + 5 using a number line and base-ten blocks. The small, square base-ten blocks represent the number 1. They are called “units” or “unit blocks.” Today, the unit blocks will help us hop across the number line! The slides below will step through the process. Click the arrow on the right to move to the next slide.

Step 1

Circle the larger addend in your addition sentence.

4 + 5 =

Step 2

Place a dot above the larger addend on the number line.

Step 3

Collect 4 unit blocks to represent the remaining addend. In this addition sentence, the remaining addend is 4.

4 + 5 = __

four red unit blocks

Step 4

Lay the unit blocks in the spaces to the right of the dot on the number line. These unit blocks will help you draw your jumps to the sum!

Step 5

Draw jumps over the unit blocks.

Step 6

After you have used all 4 of the unit blocks, your arrow will point to the sum!

4 + 5 = 9

Great job! Base-ten blocks help us make the correct number of jumps to get to the sum. Now it is your turn to try adding on a number line with unit blocks. Click the Add on a Number Line Worksheet button below to get started! When you are done, turn in your assignment to your teacher with your Weekly Written Work.
