Think About It!
Goal: How does a number line help with addition?
Adding with a number line works just like counting on! We are going to start with the larger addend and then count up using our second, smaller addend. This time, we don’t need to put the larger addend in our head and count up with our fingers. We are going to use the number line to show the larger and smaller addends. Let’s use our addition sentence for Layla to try out the number line!
8 + 6 =
First, we need to find the larger addend on the number line. Since 8 is larger than 6, let’s click on the number 8 in the addition sentence, then find and place a dot above the number 8 by clicking it on the number line below.
+ 6 =

Great job! Now that we know where our larger addend is, we can use our smaller addend to “jump” forward on the number line. Jumping forward means we are adding, and every jump is like adding 1 each time! Click on the number line 6 times to show the 6 jumps we need to make to count up.

The number that we land on is our sum! What number did the last jump land on? Click on the sum on the number line. If you click on the correct number, it will get bigger on the number line and appear in the blank of our addition sentence.
