Click the video below to watch the dragon eggs hatch! Can you help the older dragons find the total number of baby dragons? Let’s watch as they use a number line to add each group of newly hatched dragons together. Notice how they jump to the right on the number line each time they add a baby dragon.

In the highest tower of this abandoned castle there are blue dragon eggs hatching. All of the dragons are so excited to meet the new babies.

Look! They are starting to hatch! How many baby dragons do you see?

1, 2, 3. There are 3 baby dragons. Wow! Here comes another dragon.

Let’s help the adult dragons count how many babies hatch by using this number line. Number lines help us see and understand the numbers we add. We need to find the sum of 3 and 1. We can start by circling the number 3 on the number line because it is the largest addend. Now jump 1 to the right. This shows “plus one”, since 1 is our second addend. We landed on the number 4. That means 3+1=4. Great job!

More of the dragon eggs are hatching. How many dragons hatched?

1, 2, 3, 4. Yes! There are 4 more dragons.

Let’s add up the dragons using the number line again. Our addition equation will be 4+4. Begin at the 4. Now jump 4 times to the right to show “plus four”, since 4 is our second addend. What number did we land on?

Yes! We landed on the number 8. That means the sum of 4 and 4 is 8!

There are 8 baby dragons. How many more are about to hatch?

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Wow! There are 6 more baby dragons.

Can you add these dragons together using the number line? Begin with the equation.

Yes! 8+6. 8 is the largest addend, so we will circle that number on the number line. How many jumps will you make?

That’s right! You will jump 6 times to the right, since 6 is our second addend: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. The answer is 14. 8+6=14.

Now there are 14 baby dragons. Only a few more eggs need to hatch. Here they go!

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: there are 6 more baby dragons.

What is our addition equation?

Yes! 14+6. 14 is the largest addend, so we can begin counting on from 14. How many jumps will we make?

That’s right: 6 jumps to the right since 6 is the second addend. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Great job! The sum of 14 and 6 is 20.

Now we know there are 20 baby dragons in the castle! Thank you for using the number line to help the dragons add.

Jonathan, the Frog Prince, was hopping home to his castle. He hopped 8 times and then another 4 times before he got home. When Jonathan finally reached his castle, he had hopped a total of 12 times. What addition sentence represents Jonathan’s journey home?

Hint: Use the number line below to help you find the sum!
