Native Americans were the first people to inhabit North America. This means that they were the first to do many things. And some of those things made them famous, or well known. Watch the video below to learn about some of the most famous Native Americans and why they are famous. Think about the importance of their contributions and how they shaped our history.

Who are some Native Americans from our history and what are they known for?

Squanto:

Squanto was one of the first Native Americans to meet the white man who came over from England. He acted as an interpreter and guide to help the Pilgrims survive the first winter.

Powhatan:

Father of Pocahontas and the leader of the Powhatan tribe, he tried to bring peace between the natives and the English colonists. After the colonist demanded too much, conflict arose and Powhatan turned against the white man.

Pocahontas:

You may know the story of Pocahontas from the movies. She was the daughter of Chief Powhatan and she befriended the English and saved John Smith from death by her father.

Tecumseh:

Tecumseh was a leader who was famous for bringing tribes together.

Black Hawk:

Black Hawk was a fierce and powerful war chief during the War of 1812.

Sacajawea:

Sacajawea traveled with Louis and Clark as they explored the West. She helped them in their search for the Pacific Ocean. You may have heard of Sacajawea; her face is on the one dollar coin.

Sequoya:

Sequoya was famous for inventing an alphabet for the Cherokee tribe. Consisting of 86 syllables, it was used to communicate and report their tribe's history.

Geronimo:

Geronimo was famous for being a medicine man and spiritual leader who was depended on by the chiefs during wars against the Mexican soldiers.

Sitting Bull:

Sitting Bull is one of the more famous Native Americans. He was known for defeating Colonel George Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn.

Red Cloud:

Red Cloud was famous for leading the Native Americans to victory during Red Cloud's War.

Chief Joseph and Looking Glass:

Both chiefs of the Nez Perce tribes fought together against the United States Government for their land.

These are just a few of the famous Native Americans that contributed to and who made an impact on our nation's history.
