An opinion is your belief or feeling about an idea. It is your point of view. This means you will often use first-person pronouns such as I, me, mine, and my when writing your opinion. You can use details to support your opinion, but you cannot prove it. An opinion is not a fact.

Let’s read the text.
German Shepherds are large dogs. They are from a breed of farm dogs that herd animals. They make good guard dogs and can be easily trained. German Shepherds like to exercise. They are smart and have courage.
The text does not say that they would make good police dogs. But I do think that they would make good police dogs.
I can find reasons for my opinion in the text.
I know that a police dog works a lot. They need to be taught how to protect.
They text says that German Shepherds “make good guard dogs”.
They can protect.
They text says that German Shepherds “can be easily trained”.
They can be taught.
They text says that German Shepherds “like to exercise”.
They can work a lot.
I can support my opinion that German Shepherds make good police dogs because the text says that they:
Make good guard dogs
Can be easily trained
And like to exercise
Don’t just state your opinion. Go to the text and give reasons for your opinion.
Before we brainstorm, let's take a look at an example of opinion writing.
I think summer is the best season of the year. The weather is usually sunny and warm. This is much different from the bitter cold and wet snow found in the winter. In the summer, I can swim in the pool or play outside on the swings with friends. My mom gives us popsicles and lemonade for snacks. On the weekends, my family goes to the beach or an amusement park. Summer is the best time of the year!
