A Trip to The New World

If your parents told you that your family was going to take a long trip on a big ship to move to a new land, what would you think?

Other families from England and France were also leaving to find freedom of religion. People from Spain were boarding ships in hopes of finding new land for Spain, and gold and spices, too.

Many Europeans hoped to find a better life for their families in the New World.

Explorers such as Christopher Columbus, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and Francisco Vasquez de Cornado had discovered land that Europeans did not know existed.

The trip would be very long and very difficult. Then when you reached the New World, it would still be hard.

First, there were already people inhabiting the land. Native Americans already called this New World home, and there would be many battles as Europeans tried to move in on Native American lands.

Second, many people from other countries would join your family, too. English, French, and Spanish immigrated to America for a better life. The Europeans would be battling for land against other Europeans.

Third, you left your family farm and home behind. You and your family will have to start life all over in a new place you do not know anything about.

Would the trip be worth it? Would the New World be a better life?
