As early as the 1600s, Europeans were coming, or immigrating, to America. When people immigrate, they leave their country to live in a different country.

Two big European immigration waves occurred in U.S. history: One occurred during the 17th century, and one occurred in the 19th century.

While Spanish and French explorers came to America looking for land to claim for their countries, many English settlers came to find religious freedom in the 1600s.

In the early 1800s, Europeans from countries such as Ireland and Germany came to America looking for economic opportunities and a better life.
