Authors of informational texts often want to show where something is or where it took place.

The map in the video about volcanoes helped you see where the volcano Kilauea is located. Most people are used to seeing maps that identify streets, landmarks, and parts of the geography, such as mountains and rivers. But informational texts sometimes include maps that show the locations of things that wouldn't appear on an ordinary map. Take a look at these two maps from an informational article about forest fires.
