Like most of the land before European settlers came, Nacogdoches was inhabited by Native Americans. Eventually, it became one of the first missions in East Texas; it was established in 1716.
Missions were fort-like buildings that were established by Spanish Catholic priests. They were used to help spread the Catholic faith to Native Americans.
