Goal: Count back using “pictures”.

Another way to subtract using the counting-back strategy is with pictures. Look at this picture of Alex holding a bag of treats for his dog. Alex has 8 treats and has given his dog 5 of them.

Young boy, holding a brown paper bag, with the number '8' on it. There are also '5' dog bones.

In order to find how many dog treats Alex has left, we need to subtract 8 - 5. Notice that Alex’s bag is labeled with the number 8, and there are 5 dog treats to the side. Click the ten frame to see how Alex uses the dog treats to count back.

How many dog treats does Alex have left?

As Alex counted back, he labeled each dog treat with the number he said aloud. Now it’s your turn to try! Use the page below to practice counting back with pictures. When you are done, turn in your assignment to your teacher with your Weekly Written Work.
