fluency flamingoaudio buttonLet's work on our fluency today and practice our rate, expression, and intonation.

Our rate is the speed at which we read, expression is reading with feeling, and intonation is the raising and lowering of our voice as we read.

Listen to the passage below being read aloud. Listen for the reader's rate, expression, and intonation. Listen more than once if you need to. Then, read along with the recording. Can you match the rate, expression, and intonation? It's okay if you need to try a few times. Practice makes perfect!

audio buttonWe walked to the edge of the canyon. That's when I really saw the Grand Canyon for the first time. I took a long survey of it, and I immediately understood how it could mystify someone. It's amazing to think that flowing water cut through rock and formed such a beautiful sight. I could see the river below. It was a long way down. I was already hot, and I was nervous. Would I be able to make the trip down and back? I was the youngest, after all. While the scenery was gorgeous, I found myself wishing for a plunge in the ocean! I told myself that at the end of today's hike, I could reward myself with a dip in the Colorado River, instead.

audio buttonNow, it's your turn! Practice reading the passage aloud. Pay close attention to your rate, expression, and intonation.

audio buttonWhen you are ready, record yourself reading the passage on your own using the audio recording software of your choice.
