Goal: Compare the 10s and 1s of two numbers.

Harper wants to compare numbers of pumpkins. She needs to count each group to compare them. She wants to know if one group is bigger or smaller.

How do we know which is bigger? We can find the place value of each number. 15 and 21 are two-digit numbers. Two-digit numbers have a place value of tens and ones. Let’s look at place-value charts for 15 and 21.

The number 15 has 1 ten and 5 ones. The number 21 has 2 tens and 1 one. What does that look like? Let’s click through the slideshow to put the pumpkins into groups of 10s and 1s.

21 has 2 groups of 10. 15 has 1 group of 10. 21 has 1 more group of 10 than 15 does. It is the bigger number! 21 is greater than 15. We can use > to show that the first number is bigger than the second number. 21 > 15.
