Number Structure (Hundreds):

Asher and his dad love autumn. One of their favorite autumn activities is to roast pumpkin seeds. Tonight they will roast seeds from these 4 different pumpkins. Let’s see how many seeds they get from each pumpkin!

Asher’s dad has cut open the first pumpkin and scooped the seeds out of it. Look at how many seeds were inside! This pumpkin had 317 seeds in it.

317 is a very big number. But just how big is it? We can use a base ten chart and base ten blocks to help us understand the number 317.

Here are 317 base ten blocks. Do you remember how to combine these blocks to make them easier to count?

That’s right! We can combine them into hundreds, tens, and ones. For 317 we will need 3 hundreds, 1 ten, and 7 ones.

Here is the second pumpkin. It’s the biggest pumpkin out of the four that Asher and his dad have. I wonder how many seeds are inside of it.

Wow! There were 634 seeds in the second pumpkin! Can you try building the number 634 using base ten blocks?

Start with the hundreds first. How many hundreds do you need?

Yes, you need 6 hundreds! How many tens do you need?

Very good, you need 3 tens! How many ones do you need?

That’s right, you need 4 ones! 6 hundreds, 3 tens, and 4 ones make the number 634.

Now it’s Asher’s turn to cut open the third pumpkin. Let’s see how many seeds there are inside.

These base ten blocks show the amount of seeds from the inside of the third pumpkin. We know the large squares are worth 100, the long sticks are worth 10, and the small cubes are worth 1. Hmmm, this number looks very large. Let’s count these base ten blocks using the base ten chart to help us. 100, 200, 300, 400. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80. 1. Very good! What is the total number?

That’s right: 481! There were 481 pumpkin seeds in the third pumpkin. Yum!

Here is the last pumpkin. Look at all of the seeds Asher found inside of it!

These base ten blocks show the total amount of seeds in the last pumpkin. Let’s count them together using the base ten chart. 100. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90. 1, 2. Great job! The total number of pumpkin seeds from the last pumpkin is 192.
