audio buttonLet's practice our rate, expression, and intonation today.

Our rate is the speed at which we read, expression is reading with feeling, and intonation is the raising and lowering of our voice as we read.

Listen to the passage below being read aloud. Listen for the reader's rate, expression, and intonation. Listen more than once if you need to. You can even read along with the recording. Can you match the rate, expression, and intonation?

Aiden held back tears as he cleared the dishes from the table. His mother had just told him they would soon be moving. Aiden had lived all nine years of his life in the city. He would have to leave his home, his school, and his friends to move to another state. To make it even worse, Aiden's new home would be in the country. Aiden had never even been to the country. He surely did not want to live there!

Aiden tried to avoid thinking about the move, but he could not escape it. Everywhere he went, he wondered what it would be like to live in a place so different. During his daily trip to school, he stared out the window at the hustle and bustle of the city. He could only imagine how dull life in the country would be.

audio buttonNow it's your turn! Practice reading the passage aloud. Pay close attention to your rate, expression, and intonation.

audio buttonWhen you are ready, record yourself reading the passage on your own using the audio recording software of your choice. Then submit it to your teacher for a grade.
