The lines of latitude and longitude create a grid on the map. Cartographers use these grids not only to help describe location, but to accurately draw out their maps! Many artists use this same technique. Map writing is a creative and artistic process.
Take a look at some older maps in your library. Compare those with the Global Positioning System (GPS) of today, that can find us anywhere through the use of satellites. It wasn’t so easy long ago! Nature has its own form of mapping.
Take a walk. Can you see some ways that nature lets us know where we are? (For example, moss generally grows on the northern sides of trees. The sun sets in the West.)
